The house
A stone tower, a garden, and the valley in front of it.
Below Pienza the asphalt turns to gravel and the Val d'Orcia opens up. The farmhouse takes its name from its dovecote tower, standing here since the fifteenth century. The ground floor is yours.
Lucia, the owner, lives upstairs; guests stay on the ground floor. The upper flat is not rented out, so there are no other holidaymakers on the property. We have been welcoming travellers here for almost twenty-five years.

Seventy-five square metres, and a door onto the pergola.
A calm kitchen and living room with a fireplace, two bedrooms, two bathrooms — and a brick archway that opens straight onto the pergola and the view.

Outside
You eat under the pergola, with the valley in front of you.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner outside, at the table under the pergola. The lawn in front is yours all the way down, with chairs, tables and loungers. Where the grass ends, one of the most beautiful valleys in the world.
The view
The same lawn, four times a year.
Nothing here is staged. The photographs tell the seasons: green wheat in May, gold in July, mist in November.

Pienza is a ten-minute walk. The rest is a World Heritage landscape.
You are inside the Val d'Orcia Park, one kilometre from the centre of Pienza — the Renaissance ideal city, its pecorino, its balconies over the valley.

The Elysian Fields scene was filmed just below us. Take the country road that runs beneath the garden and walk to the hill of Terrapille.

Pieve di Corsignano
The Romanesque parish church where Pius II was baptised. On its portal, carved in stone and worn by eight centuries of weather, a siren with two tails.

The Gladiator field
The field begins two hundred metres below the garden. The path carries on to the hill of Terrapille, where the Elysian Fields scene was filmed: seven hundred metres in all, and never once in the car.

Pienza, the short way
Up past the parish church of Corsignano and into town at the terrace over the valley. It climbs on the way there; coming back it is all downhill.

Pienza by Viale Santa Caterina
Half a kilometre of wide gravel promenade, level and closed to cars, with the Val d'Orcia open in front of you. It reaches town at the same point as the short way: seven hundred metres more, and a gentler climb.

The valley loop
It starts at the podere and comes back to it, crossing the Gladiator field on the way. An hour inside the Val d'Orcia, on farm tracks and white roads.

Come by car: the last stretch is an unpaved country road, and there is a large parking and turning area right in front of the apartment.

The apartment is exceptionally cosy and beautifully designed, with stylish wooden furniture and great attention to detail. We spent weeks looking for reasonably priced accommodation in Val d'Orcia, and it was surprisingly hard to find anything as tastefully furnished as this.
